The next day I called the School of Medicine at USC. I also called UCLA to see if they had any openings.
After a few days of calling the medical centers, I finally had some answers for my sister. I called her a week after her original call. It was Saturday again.
"I've got good news for you, Homa. USC and UCLA are both willing to hire you. You need to complete one more year in an intern ship position because California requires a two-year internship, but they will accept your accrued time at Bethesda. They can offer you $25,000 that year and if you want to earn more money, you can spend some of your nights in the emergency room."
Homa's response was not as enthusiastic as I would have thought. "Thank you, Parvin, but I'm not sure. One more year of interning might place too heavy a burden on Father and the children. Dad hasn't been too happy lately and I'm afraid he'll become severely depressed if I continue working such long hours. I just don't think I can do this to him."
I felt she was making excuses. "But Homa, if you come out here and get a place close to us, I can watch over Father and take care of your children while you work. You know, I'm pregnant now and so Dad can have fun with the newborn. You know how much he loves to sit and watch babies. He should be fine out here."
"Well, I have to think more. Give me some time."
Homa didn't move to California. She didn't like the idea of having to spend an entire year working as an intern again. She was also being pressured by our mother to stay with Mohsen.
At the end of the year she completed her residency in pediatrics and started a new one in child psychiatry at the Harlem Hospital Center which was associated with Columbia University. For the next two years, she worked toward that requirement.
